Dyker library to raise roof for repairs

The Dyker branch of the Brooklyn Public Library is about to get a much-needed new roof.

Thanks to $750,000 in funding allocated by Councilmember Vincent Gentile and Borough President Marty Markowitz, the library on the corner of 13th Avenue and 82nd Street is going to get its roof replaced, since the current one is badly damaged and leaking.

The roof repair project will include the demolition and removal of the damaged roof, as well as installation of a new roof with potential drain and paver additions. Once construction commences, the Brooklyn Public Library will receive an estimate and a complete scope of work for design and repair.

The branch may have to close temporarily due to noisy work or if extensive interior work is needed. The most disruptive work will take place when the library is not open.

The project is slated to be finished by 2016.

“Thanks to the generosity of Councilmember Gentile and Borough President Markowitz, the library will be able to undertake the much-needed roof repair at our Dyker branch,” said Linda Johnson, president and CEO of the Brooklyn Public Library. “We are appreciative of their continued support and leadership, as well as their dedication to the communities they serve.”

“Projects like this are what help keep Brooklyn the best place to live, work and raise a family. Readers young and old will enjoy their books ‘cover to cover’ while under the cover of a safe and sturdy roof!” saidMarkowitz.

Gentile added, “Public libraries are one of the greatest treasures we have and serve as a very important part of our neighborhoods. That is why it so important that we ensure libraries have everything they need in order to continue to provide the full range of important services to New Yorkers.”
