Meet Captain Bill Taylor, the 62nd Precinct’s new commanding officer

Captain Bill Taylor, the 62nd Precinct’s new commanding officer, introduced himself to residents at Community Board 11’s monthly meeting held at the Bensonhurst Center for Rehabilitation and Health on Thursday, October 10.

Deputy Inspector James Rooney, who served as the 62nd Precinct’s CO for the past three years, is now leading the helm at the 60th Precinct.

Taylor said that his career began in the financial industry, graduating with an MBA from St. John University’s School of Accounting and working at Price, Waterhouse and Cooper in midtown. In 1992, he began working for the city sheriff and joined the Police Department in 1995, serving as a Housing Authority officer in Coney Island.

From there, he was transferred to Manhattan North Narcotics.

“I’ve done everything but transit,” Taylor said. “I got a call from a captain in the financial affairs bureau,” he added, noting that he used his past knowledge of the industry to do investigations on financial firms.

Taylor was promoted to detective in that unit and was soon made a sergeant. Shortly after, he was transferred to the 69th Precinct, then internal affairs, where he investigated excessive fines. At the 81st Precinct, he became a lieutenant and then went to the detective squad where he was made captain.

At the 81st Precinct, Chief Phillip Banks III, who is now serving as the chief of the Police Department, was the CO.

Then, Taylor was transferred to Brooklyn South.

“During captain school, there were 13 guys in my graduating class and seven wanted to be in Brooklyn South,” Taylor recalled. “I called the chief to make sure I would get there and he said, ‘Didn’t I tell you if you want Brooklyn South you’ll get it? Stop asking me.’ And I did.”

He subsequently served as executive officer for the 60th Precinct, then was at the 70th Precinct for a couple of years, before becoming CO at the Brooklyn South Task Force.

“I got a call at chief of patrol that I was going to be a CO at the 62. I was hoping for the 62,” Taylor said. “I’m excited. From what I hear, Rooney is a tough act to follow.”

Taylor promised a new beginning.

“I’ve got a really great team. There’s a lot of good stuff going on,” he said. “It’s going to be great.”
