Raising awareness of hunger, one step at a time

Local residents put their best feet forward in the fight against hunger on Saturday, September 28, through Reaching Out Community Services’ annual Walk Against Hunger.

Over 300 people gathered at 86th Street to make a journey down 13th Avenue to publicize the problem and the group that is striving to end it.

“We want to enable awareness and get more people to know about the organization,” said Tom Neve, the group’s founder and executive director.

Reaching Out is a community service provider that helps over 5,000 families in need. From food stamps to health insurance and tutoring programs, Reaching Out provides help for families that require it. “People don’t realize how many families are struggling and we want to be there in time of need,” stressed Neve.

The walk was a success, tallying more walkers than the previous year, and Reaching Out is now looking forward to its next event, Gobbler Giving, which is a Thanksgiving outreach for families during the holidays.
