Dyker singers hit the high notes

A musical group that started about two years ago in the Dyker Heights library is on the road to expansion, and the local civic organization is hoping to give it a little bit of help in getting started.

At the November meeting of the Dyker Heights Civic Association, group President Fran Vella-Marrone presented members of the Dyker Singers with a donation to assist the group in, as Vella-Marrone noted, “becom[ing] a real community organization” that not only provides area residents with entertainment, but also enables members to enjoy the “fellowship” that is part and parcel of such groups.

Having a good voice is not a requirement for membership, said one of the singing group’s members, the Reverend Elizabeth Nebrasky.

“We have people who couldn’t carry a note in a basket,” she laughed. “We will take everybody. We range in age from basically 50 to 92, and we are not only learning music, we are learning about each other. We have started to get to know each other and care about each other. That’s what groups should be.”

Having just put on a Beatles concert, the Dyker Singers are now preparing their holiday concert, which will be held at 2 p.m. on December 18 in the library, 8202 13th Avenue. “The check will help us, hopefully, take the show on the road,” Nebrasky noted.

The generosity is fairly typical of DHCA. Each year around Thanksgiving, the organization makes a contribution to a worthy cause. “We should be thankful for what we have,” noted Vella-Marrone, citing the “organizations in the community.”

The group, which meets most Wednesdays from 2 to 4 in the library’s community center, was originally the brainchild of librarian Eileen Kassab, who works at the Dyker branch of the Brooklyn Public Library.
