Boy’s pellet gun triggers lockdown at I.S. 220

Nearly 1,500 students were briefly put on lockdown at I.S. 220 John J. Pershing shortly before noon on Thursday, January 16, after a student reported seeing a classmate with a weapon in his backpack.

Police responded to the 11:50 a.m. call from school staff by going room to room until they found the 15-year-old boy in class with his bag, which contained an orange-tipped pellet gun.

As the boy did not use or threaten anyone with the weapon, he will not face criminal charges, said police, who are leaving any disciplinary action up to the school, which is located at 4812 Ninth Avenue and serves students in Sunset Park and Borough Park.
