Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst mark Good Friday

Good Friday in southwest Brooklyn was marked by the traditional procession of the Way of the Cross. On April 18, area residents from several neighboring parishes gathered together on local streets to pay tribute to the death and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Participants held up large black crosses as well as a statue of Christ on the cross as they followed in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Hymns were sung, and participants held candles aloft. Bishop Raymond Chappetto, auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, led the spiritual march.

The ceremony began at 8 p.m. at P.S. 48 and proceeded along 18th Avenue to Bay Ridge Parkway.

The event was organized by the parishes of St. Athanasius, St. Bernadette, St. Dominic, St. Finbar, St. Frances Cabrini, St. Mary Mother of Jesus and Sts. Simon and Jude with the Knights of Columbus.
