Unsung Bay Ridge: Preservationist par excellence

My unsung hero of the week is Victoria HofmoVincent GentileÂ’sPreservation Committee.

She is a leader of the Bay Ridge Arts and Cultural Alliance. She is also the founder of the annual Viking Fest, to be held this year on May 17 at the Owls Head Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in advance of the annual Norwegian Day Parade, held on Sunday, May 18. She works non-stop for her community, and we are fortunate to have her in our neighborhood.

You are invited to a free exhibition and lecture on the history of the German American community by historian Kathryn Jolowicz. The New Utrecht Reformed Church will host this interesting evening event on Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m. The parish house is located at 18th Avenue and 84th Street. For additional information, please call 718-256-7173.

The annual fundraiser to benefit the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade will be held at the Salty Dog, 75th Street and Third Avenue, on May 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hats off to Frankie Marra whose patriotic spirit has helped to revive this parade. The Frankie Marra Band will provide entertainment. Please come out and have an enjoyable evening for a good cause. A donation of $20. 00 is requested.

At the first sign of a cold, lie on your side and place a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in your ear. Let it sit for a few minutes before draining it out. Do the same in the other ear. You can use the peroxide as a gargle as well for sore throats. If hydrogen peroxide is not available, three cloves of garlic crushed in a bowl of hot chicken soup should also bring relief.

Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns, or on any medication.
