This summer, Rooftop Films sets sights for Sunset Park’s Industry City

Riding on the heels of a successful turnout last year, New York-based non-profit Rooftop Films will be back again with Industry City as this year’s presenting sponsor and primary venue for the 2014 summer series. Rooftop Films will provide film-goers with film screenings from May through August, mostly in the backyard of Sunset Park, Industry City.

“Last year’s screenings at Industry City were a huge success, and we’re pleased to bring the series back to the complex and to Sunset Park on a bigger scale,” said Andrew Kimball, Industry City CEO.

Industry City has been working towards restoring their six million-square-foot property into a center for cutting-edge innovation. The 119-year-old complex hub consists of artists, makers, creators, builders and entrepreneurs.

Established in 1997, Rooftop Films aims to engage diverse communities by showing independent movies in outdoor locations, producing new films, coordinating youth media education and renting equipment at low cost to artists.

Rooftop Films shares a similar goal with Industry City and that is to build, enhance and support arts communities in diverse neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs.

“The Rooftop Films Summer Series is not just about discovering great new films and music,” said Program Director for Rooftop FilmsDan Nuxoll. “It is also about visiting different neighborhoods and spaces.”

He mentioned that last year they presented three sold-out screenings on the roofs and in the courtyard at Industry City. “Our audience loved their iconic buildings and appreciated the opportunity to explore a little bit of their historic complex,” said Nuxoll.

Nuxoll added, “This summer, Industry City is showing their support for Rooftop Films and the Sunset Park Community by hosting more than 15 events onsite, including our opening and closing nights and two additional free screenings. We are thrilled to be a part of the exciting new things going on in Sunset Park.”

“Rooftop Films provides us with a distinctive opportunity to bring independent film to our tenants, to the Sunset Park community and to new audiences across the city while showcasing our property,” added Kimball.
