GOP revs its engines for November

Republicans rallied in Bay Ridge, on Tuesday, June 3, with their star attraction – GOP gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino – to kick off the election season, when it’s all hands on deck for political parties hoping to gain momentum.

Some 300 people from around Brooklyn crowded into the Bay Ridge Manor, 476 76th Street, for the Republican Road to Victory Party to listen to Astorino, as well as incumbent State Senator Marty Golden, Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis and Congressmember Michael Grimm.

Astorino contended the state was going in the wrong direction, and said he was the person to change that. “We are losing, and losing badly,” he contended. “In all the important categories, we are dead last.”

But, he went on, “We can do better,” and invoked the upset season of 1994, when the Rangers won the Stanley Cup, “and a Cuomo lost.”

Astorino added that his victory to become Westchester’s county executive could be a template for a gubernatorial upset come November. At this point, incumbent Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo has a 29 point lead.

“Westchester, in statewide races, is where elephants go to die,” he concluded. “But, we are breeding little elephants all over Westchester. Let’s put New York back in the winning column again.”

Before Astorino, Golden revved the engine. “Can we do it?” he demanded, and the crowd roared back, “Yes.” “Are we going to do it?” “Yes.” “Are we going to elect Republicans?” “Yes.”

“We can’t do it without you,” Golden added, asking his listeners to help “get our message out across the state, across Kings County, and make sure we deliver.”

The event also provided a platform for Grimm – who was indicted in April on a slew of charges related to a business he once owned — and who blames President Obama and Democrats for his legal troubles.

“Look and see why they are coming after me so hard,” he told the roaring crowd. “It’s obvious. They don’t want any opposition. But, this proud U.S. Marine is not going to lie down and listen to any of this nonsense. We will take back the city and the state. Keep the faith and never give up on the U.S.A.”
