Reaching-Out seeks to outfit youngsters in need with new school supplies

Striving to help over 500 underprivileged youngsters start the 2014-2015 school year right, local food pantry Reaching-Out Community Services is looking for donations for its Big Backpack Giveaway on Thursday, August 28.

From 1 to 4 p.m., the giveaway will be held outside the organization’s office at 7708 New Utrecht Avenue, where children from first through eighth grade who have received vouchers for the event can stop by and pick up a backpack and school supplies.

Although they currently have not secured funding for the event, the organization is looking for people to donate any type of school supplies to the organization.

This is the list of school supplies that the organization needs: crayons, colored pencils, pencils, notebooks, construction paper, pens, pencil cases, paper towels, wipes, protractors, compasses, rulers, hand sanitizer, markers, pocket folders, index cards, tape, labels, erasers, glue sticks and homework assignment books.

“We’re glad it’s part of our mission to help those unfortunate not just with social services and food, but especially with education,” said Thomas Neve, executive director of Reaching-Out Community Services. “We want the children not to feel that they are behind in the sense that they won’t have the same ability to learn properly because of lack of supplies.”

Those interested can donate online at rcsprograms.org to sponsor a child for $20 or drop off supplies at Reaching-Out’s office location mentioned earlier Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. until August 27.
