Zombie Takeover invades Coney Island

Zombies, ghouls and other members of the undead gathered at MCU Park as the Brooklyn Cyclones, Luna Park and Coney Island USA joined forces on Wednesday, July 2, for the Coney Island Zombie Takeover. “We were inspired by the success of shows like ‘The Walking Dead’ and how they’ve become part of our pop culture,” said Cyclones Director of Communications Billie Harner. The event kicked off with a reception at Sideshows by the Seashore at Surf Avenue and West 12th Street where zombies could meet up, and drink as they prepared for the crawl. At the ballpark, the zombies prepared for the Brain Bash on the Beach. Following their crawl to the stadium, some of the world’s most competitive eaters — led by Tim ‘Gravy’ Brown and Patrick ‘Deep Dish’ Bertoletti — gathered along with others for the brain-eating contest.Contestants had to consume 10 pounds of brains and whoever ate the most not only received a $200 cash prize, but also got to lead their fellow “undead” on a crawl around the ballpark following the game. Other prizes included $75 for second place and $25 for third, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Rain caused the Cyclones game and the crawl to be postponed. “We were really excited about it and planned a lot of activities, but sadly the rain interfered,” said Harner, who said he hopes that the event will resume at a later date, or that next year’s event will be bigger and better than ever. Until then, much like this season’s “Walking Dead,” the zombie invasion is still stuck in mid-season form.
