24-year-old arrested on Brooklyn Bridge

On Sunday, August 24 around 12:15 p.m., police arrested 24-year-old Yaroslav Kolchin after observing him allegedly ascending a support beam connected to the tower on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge.

A uniformed sergeant initially saw someone climbing the cable beam and broadcast the suspect’s description and location over the police radio, requesting Aviation, Harbor and Emergency Service Units to respond. As police personnel arrived, Kolchin allegedly reached the top of the tower and was observed walking back and forth on the landing, where he took photos with his iPhone. According to cops, he did not cause any damage or attempt to remove anything.

With Aviation units hovering next to the tower, the suspect then descended the tower safely the same way he went up, and was met by ESU personnel at the security gate, where he was taken into custody without further incident at approximately 12:38 p.m.

While there were no reported injuries, Kolchin was charged with Reckless Endangerment, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Criminal Trespass and Disorderly Conduct Hazardous Condition.
