On Sunday, August 24 at 11:15 p.m., Sergeant Michael Dario and Police Officer Elias Khan, assigned to the 62nd Precinct, were on routine patrol when they responded to a 911 call of a child having difficulty breathing at a residence near Bay Parkway and 74th Street.
Upon arrival, the officers were met by a 32-year-old woman saying that her two-week-old infant son was not breathing. Both officers observed the baby unresponsive, with his face turning blue. According to cops, Khan immediately began to render aid to the child, first by conducting a finger sweep of the infant’s mouth to make sure there were no foreign objects in the airway, and then turning the baby over, face down and on an angle, administering multiple back thrusts. During this time, Dario requested an expedited response of EMS personnel to the location.
Within 10 to 15 seconds, the baby began to breathe on his own, becoming responsive and crying. EMS responded and removed the child to Maimonides Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
