A rousing Big Apple welcome to Fort Hamilton’s new garrison commander, Colonel Joseph Davidson. He took charge of his new command during colorful ceremonies on the post’s bluff overlooking the Narrows waterway.Flags of all 50 states and U.S. possessions lined the outer edge of the bluff and there was an Army color guard dispatched from the military district in Washington, D.C. along with a quintet ensemble from the Army Band also based in D.C.Steeped in long-standing military tradition, the post colors were passed from outgoing Garrison Commander Eluyn Gines to Thomas SchoenbeckThe program included an invocation by the Post’s new chaplain, Major Eric Meyners. The Army quintet played the National Anthem and later New York, New York and the Army Song. A FDNY fire boat out in the bay shot up water sprays of red, white and blue saluting the new garrison commander.Over 250 military, city, state and federal officials, veterans and community leaders attended the event. Earlier in the day, at the post headquarters, Colonel Gines and his Command Sergeant Major Hector Prince were presented with Legion of Merit medals and certificates. * * *Our hearty congratulations to former New York Yankees and New York Mets Manager Joe Torre on his recent induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, at Cooperstown in upstate New York.Torre is one of the few Brooklyn-born inductees voted into the hallowedhall. While outstanding Brooklyn Dodgersplayers like Duke SniderPee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson are also members of the hall, none are Brooklyn natives!Besides Torre, fellow Brooklynites in the hall include Waite Hoyt, Willie KeelerSandy KoufaxPhil Rizzuto and Mickey Welch. * * *Last year, Mallory Hagen who won the Miss America Pageant and while born in Opelika, Alabama, was residing in Windsor Terrace and attending the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).She was earlier Miss Brooklyn in 2010 and Miss New York in 2012. She is the only Miss America winner ever to represent Brooklyn. Now her likeness has been castin bronze and her statue has been erected in Kennedy Plaza directly across fromthe old Convention Center, now known as the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.We were in AC the other day and shota picture of her.She is holding out another crown for the next winner.Female tourists can step under the outreached crown for their own photo op.So as former Borough President Marty Markowitz would often say, Brooklyn is in the house! * * * ———————————————————————————— To reach Ted General via the Internet, his e-mail address is:General@Journalist.com
