NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes
In honor of her decades of community service, this week I have chosen Janet Gounis, an active volunteer with the Bay Ridge Community Council, to be our unsung hero.
Janet has worked on a variety of committees, spent hundreds of hours and given of her financial resources, to ensure the success of many projects throughout the years. She is also a board member of the Guild For Exceptional Children.
As a second vice president for Capital One Bank, Janet has been able to have her bank sponsor several community projects. She is also an active member of the Holy Cross Church, and a proud wife to her husband, Andrew.
Janet enjoys her down time with her grandchildren Joanna and Andrew, and her sons, Peter and Anthony. I believe that this recognition is long overdue, and would like to publicly thank Janet for her continuous work on behalf of the Bay Ridge community.
The Brooklyn Columbus Day Parade Brunch will be held on Sunday, October 5, at noon, at the Dyker Beach Golf Course. Happy birthday greetings to my lovely wife, Phillipa and our dear friend Anne Strafaci of St. Patrick’s Parish. Anne celebrates her birthday on August 26 and Phillipa on August 28. May they be blessed with many more healthy and happy ones.
UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Blueberry Juice
A study at the University of Cincinnati led to the conclusion that blueberry juice can help to reverse age-related memory decline.
Researchers studied the effects of blueberry juice (without added sugar) on adults in their 70s who suffered from various levels of memory decline. The group that drank a pint of blueberry juice daily for 12 weeks performed significantly better in memory tests. It is also recommended for stabilizing blood sugar levels and preventing food cravings that can lead to weight gain.
Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns, or on any medication.
