Newtown Creek Renewable Gas Project begins construction phase

Talk about a sustainable resource.

National Grid has begun the design and construction of a purification system that will create renewable natural gas out of the biogas – mostly methane byproducts – in wastewater collected at the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The city’s organic waste collection program will also contribute raw materials for conversion.

The project has the support of the city Department of Environmental Protection and aims to be a model for how to create a sustainable clean energy source that can be used in homes and businesses.

The project moves forward as Mayor Bill de Blasio pushes for an 80 percent citywide reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
