Parkville League begins football season with opening ceremony

Are you ready for some football?

Sunday, September 28 marked the opening celebration of Parkville Youth Organization’s football season. A ceremony was held, players were introduced, local dignitaries spoke and then action on the gridiron began with teams from the major division.

“Even though the minor division didn’t play, we had nearly 100 percent attendance from everyone,” said Parkville Executive Director of Public Relations Bob Cavaliere. “The players from the different divisions were introduced, as were the directors of each division.”

A 40-year membership award was given to one of the league’s members, Tony Gallo. “He received a special eagle trophy,” Cavaliere said.

In addition, said Cavaliere Assemblymember Peter Abbate presented the league with a $3,000 grant, with another $10,000 state grant coming from State Senator Marty Golden.  “The cost for the league is astronomical,” Cavaliere stressed. The grants, he added, “help us tremendously.”

Cavaliere stated registration has decreased. For the first time, there will be no pee-wee league this season, possibly  due to parents’ fear of injuries, he said, remarking, “There’s a lot of talk about football concussions in every level of the game. That could be a contributor why our program losing ground.”

However, thanks to the financial help, the league remains strong. “With this money coming in, we’re doing work on the field and electrical system. It will go a long way,” he said.

Both games featured lopsided scores, but Cavaliere believes all teams played well and all the players will improve, thanks to future practice sessions. “They played a heads-up ball game,” he said. “With practice, I’m very optimistic.”
