The 56th Street block between Sixth and Seventh Avenues is now known as Subhi Widdi Way – co-named after the founder of Widdi Catering Hall, which has sat at the corner since the early 1980s.
Seeing the street sign unveiled by city officials shortly after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 22, one of Widdi’s sons, Frank, said he felt “he would enjoy it.
“My dad spent most of his life in Sunset Park and would give to anybody in need because nothing gave him joy more than giving,” said Frank, who likened the street co-naming as something the community can do to give back to him.
“It is a true honor to celebrate the life of Widdi, a long-time leader in our Sunset Park community,” said Councilmember Carlos Menchaca.
Widdi immigrated to Brooklyn from Jerusalem in 1960. He died in November of 2012 at the age of 80.
