62nd Precinct honors heroes at Medal Day

Hats off to our heroes.

The 62^nd Precinct, serving the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn South and fronted by Captain Bill Taylor, honored its own at Medal Day on Saturday, November 15.

“It was a very, very meaningful and wonderful event,” lauded 62^nd Precinct Community Council President Lou Trimboli at the council’s November meeting. “A number of our officers were honored – many of them have been honored as cops of the month before”

According to Trimboli, the morning ceremony was particularly touching because of those family members who filled the room – a sentiment echoed by Taylor.

“You really got to see the other side of their lives – oftentimes with cops and firefighters, you see them all the time but a lot of the time, you don’t really see their family,” said Trimboli. “So many people came out and made this year’s Medal Day a truly wonderful event.”

Taylor – who spoke highly of those honored at the ceremony – agreed.

“These guys are just the best,” he said.

An invocation and benediction were given by Monsignor David Cassato and additional remarks were given by Lieutenant Tony Giorgio, and Assistant Chief Owen Monaghan, commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South.

Sergeant Michael Dario, and Police Officers Elias Khan, Alex Kajewski, Eric Smith, Thomas Silla and Eduard Nogol were presented with Commendation Awards. All six honorees were named Cops of the Month in September for their life-saving efforts over the summer.

Additionally, over 30 officers, sergeants and lieutenants were awarded for Meritorious Police Duty and more than 50 were awarded for Excellent Police Duty. School crossing guards Francesca Errante and Maureen Kenny (both 200year veterans of the job) were commended with School Crossing Guard Longevity awards.

Domenicio Fratacci was named Honorary Member of the 62^nd Precinct and Anthony Rabena, 38-year treasurer of the precinct’s community council, was given the Distinguished Service Award. Members of the BK CERT 10/11 Team received the same award.

In closing, Retired Police Officer Carmine Romeo was recognized for his dedication.
