Council approves citywide cuts to greenhouse gas emissions

The New York City Council unanimously passed a bill that pushes for an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The effort will require more trees be planted, city buildings to be retrofitted with energy efficient materials, including new light bulbs.

The bill is expected to be signed with no fuss by Mayor Bill de Blasio, who introduced his intention to enforce such a bill on September 21 in the wake of the People’s Climate March.
