Jersey resident charged in fatal Bensonhurst collision

The driver who ran down a Bensonhurst resident on Sunday, December 28 has been charged with failure to exercise due care and driving without a license.

The black 2011 Toyota Camry driven by 60-year-old New Jersey native Simcha Rosemblatt struck Raul Leone-Vasquez, 27, who succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, December 30. Leone-Vasquez was struck while crossing the street at around 6:33 a.m. at Bay Parkway and Bath Avenue, within the confines of the 62nd Precinct.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Leone-Vasquez lying on the ground with apparent head trauma.

A preliminary investigation determined that the Leone-Vasquez had been attempting to cross Bay Parkway from east to west in the crosswalk when he was struck by the vehicle, which was travelling southbound on Bay Parkway at Bath Avenue.

Rosemblatt remained at the scene and was taken into immediate custody while Leone-Vasquez was removed by EMS to Lutheran Hospital, where he later died.
