Eagles soar over Fontbonne to start 2015 season

St. Edmund Prep 54 Fontbonne 42

The (1-1) Bonnies uphill climb for 2015 began at (3-0) St. Edmund Prep, one of this season’s early frontrunners. Entering the season with a re-configured team of mainly underclassmen, Fontbonne’s rookie freshman point guard Katie Marquardt (18 points) successfully matched up with the Eagles’ senior Kellie O’Neill (19 points), one of the top point guards in the GCHSAA Division II.

Along with Marquardt, Emily Lind (13 points) led Fontbonne on a 12 to three run in the second quarter to allow the Bonnies to take a 22-18 lead at the half. According to St. Edmund’s coach, “The effort really wasn’t there,” commenting on his team’s second quarter performance. “But we changed that in the second half.”

St. Edmund managed to come back on a 17 to eight run as Nina DiCioccio (seven points), Alex Jacques (nine points) and Kelly O’Donnell (12 points) led the Eagles to a 35-30 third quarter lead.

On his team’s second half surge, Coach Kelly stated that in addition to O’Neill’s steady play, Kelly O’Donnell’s late game scoring (nine points including two three-point baskets) was instrumental for the turn around in the second half. “When O’Donnell gets hot, she can really shoot,” said the second year coach.

Complimenting his opponent, Coach Kelly said of the Bonnies, “Fontbonne played us hard for all four quarters. They’re a young and disciplined team.” In the earlier JV game, St. Edmund also topped Fontbonne in a close contest with the Eagles winning by the score of 39-33.
