Parkville celebrates football season during annual awards day

The Parkville Youth Organization officially wrapped up another successful season of football on Sunday, December 14 as the league held its annual award ceremony at the Dyker Beach Golf Course. A crowd of young football players gathered at the venue with their families, coaches and local dignitaries to receive their trophies and celebrate with their teammates.

“It was a terrific day,” said Parkville Executive Director of Public Relations Bob Cavaliere. “It was the first time we had it at Dyker Beach Golf Course. “They did terrific job. The ambiance was great. It went smoothly. The kids enjoyed getting trophies and were well behaved.”

Unlike past years when the event was a dinner, this year it took place at 9:30 a.m. and a gourmet breakfast was served. “We were worried that people wouldn’t like the idea, but everyone that attended ending up loving it. We received so many compliments. We plan on doing it again next year.”

During the ceremony, every kid received participation trophy. Special awards were also given out, such as all-star and memorial awards. “We gave out two special awards named after deceased members of Parkville,” said Cavaliere. “It doesn’t go to best player. It’s usually someone who has been with the program for a while or is leaving and has shown good character and sportsmanship.”

Matthew Sciarrone received the Major Division Award, while Steven Navarro took home the Minor Division Award.

Looking back at the season that was, Cavaliere was impressed with the end results. “It was a fantastic season,” he said. “Kids had a lot of fun and learned the sport. The games were evenly matched and there were no major arguments or any problems with parents and coaches.”

Parkville’s little league baseball and softball program returns in February.
