Hugh L Carey Tunnel tube to close this weekend

One tube at the Hugh L Carey Tunnel will be closed from 9:30 p.m. Friday, October 2 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, October 3 as part of a four-year, $282.5 million Sandy repair project, announced the Department of Transportation on Tuesday, September 29.

One lane will operate in each direction in the remaining tube, and motorists may experience delays as a result.

This work is weather dependent and may be cancelled due to rain.

The Sandy repair project includes replacing multiple systems that were damaged in the 2012 Superstorm Sandy event including the entire traffic control and communications, lighting, drainage pump and fire line systems.

Contractors will also repair damaged concrete, install new LED lights and emergency way-finding safety lights; replace tunnel wall tiles, ceiling finishes, catwalks and duct banks; rehabilitate curbs and gutters and repave the tunnel roadways.
