Unsung Bay Ridge: Community Spirit

This week our unsung hero is a man who, though not a longtime resident, has done much to contribute to his Dyker Heights neighborhood. As a spiritual leader, Father Khader Khalilia, pastor of Redeemer St. John Lutheran Church, has brought a great outreach of community service within the Dyker/Bay Ridge area.

He is always willing to lend a hand when asked to participate in any fund raising activity. Father Khader has successfully brought Universal Pre-K, to the St. John Redeemer School; which went from under capacity to now having a waiting list for entry. He was born in Bethlehem, and interned at the Salam Arabic Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge, where he joined the Unity Task Force to foster unity between the various cultures in our area.

He combines his community service with that of his beautiful wife, Danielle, who tutors children in marital arts as well as teaching them traditional art. He is a board member of the Metropolitan Detention Center Federal Bureau and volunteers to assist in drug counseling. His tireless energy is a welcome addition to our community; as he seeks to combine the spiritual and material well-being of our residents.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Apple Cider Vinegar, Charcoal Tablets

This week I was reminded of the power of simple remedies. Food poisoning responds very fast to the powerful combination of apple cider vinegar and charcoal tablets. There is no need to tell you of the discomfort and pain that accompanies food poisoning. However, two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in water (mixed with some honey for taste) followed by two activated charcoal tablets (from the pharmacy) and you will be as good as new in half the time. Repeat in four hours if some symptoms still persist.

Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns, or on any medication.
