Budget to make room for bulletproof cop cars

Sunset Park Assemblymember Felix Ortiz, sponsor of Assembly legislation to establish the Police Protection Fund to retrofit cop cars with bulletproof glass, announced on Friday, October 2 that the final 2015-16 budget would allocate $60 million for police safety measures.

“The lives of our law enforcement officers must not be compromised by partisan politics,” said Ortiz. “Those brave men and women who put their lives on the line for all of us deserve the best safety equipment available. We must spare no expense to ensure this.”

The funding in the budget will provide for the installation of bulletproof glass in patrol cars statewide and comes after lawmakers on both sides of the aisle called for a part of the state’s nearly $5 billion surplus to be used for the Police Protection fund. The legislation was sponsored in the State Senate by State Senators Philip Boyle and Martin Golden,
