The mother of a Sunset Park toddler who drowned over the weekend has been arrested in her death.
According to police, two-year-old Melody Pheng was found unconscious and unresponsive by authorities inside of her family’s home at 652 47th Street just before 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 13. The death was ruled a homicide by Medical Examiner Barbara Sampson on Tuesday, March 15, the same day that the child’s mother, Lin Li, 24, was placed under arrest.
Pheng’s father – who reportedly told investigators that the death was an accident – is said to have attempted to resuscitate the girl before Emergency Medical Services transported her to Maimonides Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
According to reports, Pheng’s four-year-old brother was also at home at the time of the incident. A police source said that there were signs of abuse on the boy as well; that is currently under investigation. That same source said that Li had incriminated herself in her daughter’s death while she was being interviewed by police.
Li was charged with murder in the second degree, manslaughter and acting in a manner injurious to a child.
