Undefeated Varsity softball Tigers win ISAL Championship

Capping off an undefeated season, Bay Ridge Prep’s Varsity Softball Tigers are now champions.

The team took home the Independent School Athletic League (ISAL) crown after defeating Brooklyn Friends School with an 9-7 win on May 11. The match-up was the third meeting of the two teams this season and pitted last year’s champs, Brooklyn Friends, against Bay Ridge Prep, this year’s undefeated front-runner.

The win did not come easy, however, as the Tigers found themselves down three runs after just the first half-inning of play. With perseverance, the softball squad battled back to overcome the three-run deficit and surged ahead to secure the come-from-behind victory.

“This was the culmination of three months of hard work,” Head Softball Coach Anthony Bernard said of the team’s stellar season and championship win. “Playing in the cold, in the rain, practicing when they were tired, practicing when they weren’t feeling well. They never let pressure get to them, they never fell apart and their sportsmanship was first class.”

Assistant Coach Ember Chabot said that every student on the team contributed to the Tigers advancing to becoming champions.

“This game was a testament to the team’s ability to come together and work through whatever each individual might be dealing with and pull together as one unit,” Chabot said. “There were some beautiful plays, some aggressive base running and some of the best hits we’ve had all season.”

Speaking of the historic win for the softball team, Athletic Director Tony Campbell added, “The energy, camaraderie and commitment that this softball team brought to our program this year is unrivaled. These students and coaches have made Bay Ridge Prep Athletics history – first, an undefeated softball season and now a softball championship. They should be proud because the entire school is certainly proud of them.”
