Reaching-Out Community Services looks for backpack event sponsors

Reaching-Out Community Services is helping children go back to school, one backpack at a time.

The backpack giveaway, which is sponsored by Project Hope NY, along with  The Rotary Club of Verrazano, Cpex and Fillmore Brooklyn Real estate companies, assists children in low-income families to go back to school with the tools they need to succeed. For over five years, the event and its sponsors have helped over 500 children go back to school with a backpack filled with notebooks, pencils, erasers, pens and folders.

“We want to give the families who are registered at Reaching-Out a little less to worry about,” said Thomas Neve, the organization’s executive director.

The event, which started as a community service project for a local Boy Scout, has grown into an annual event.

“As we recognized and heard families that are struggling, it was just common sense to help them in other ways,” said Neve, who is also the founder of Reaching-Out Community Services. Listening to its clients and what they need, Neve says continuing the program was a ‘no-brainer.’

Reaching-Out Services provide low-income families with various services such as social services and a food pantry. Neve has high hopes the community will come out to sponsor children for the event, and assure their families that they will be starting school off on the right foot with their new school supplies.

“When times are tough, we all come together,” said Neve.

The giveaway — which is for Reaching-Out clients only — will take place on Thursday, August 25. To sponsor a child, visit rcsprograms.org/big-back-pack-giveaway/.
