Bay Ridge student makes it onto PSAL international girl’s soccer team

Local Bay Ridge student Erin McCarthy, 16, was chosen as one of the 16 finalists for the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) International Girl’s Soccer Team and is representing Brooklyn for 10 days in Spain.

On Monday, August 7, the McCarthys left for Spain where Erin is training with professional soccer players in an exclusive facility, participating in various soccer games, and will have the opportunity to see a live soccer game in Barcelona.

“In the beginning of June, Erin’s soccer coach told us they were nominating her for the team,” said Joe McCarthy, Erin’s father. “Erin has been playing soccer her whole life and it’s nice to see her finally get recognized. We are extremely proud.”

Over 120 high school upperclassmen throughout the five boroughs were nominated for the girls and boys teams by their coaches in their respective schools. The number was narrowed down to 16 students per team based on the best soccer skills and sportsmanship across New York City.

“I am beyond excited about this opportunity,” said Erin McCarthy. “I grew up playing soccer my whole life and I can’t wait to actually learn from and play with professionals on their own soccer field.”

Erin will graduate Telecommunications High School in 2017 and plans to continue playing soccer in college.
