Fort Hamilton High School gearing up to celebrate 75 years

Celebrating 75 years of excellence, Fort Hamilton High School will be marking a milestone anniversary on Saturday, October 29.

The big day will be spotlighted at the school, 8301 Shore Road, with tours, student performances and visits from distinguished alumni.

“As a graduate of Fort Hamilton High School, and I’m very active with the alumni association, I’m pretty excited about it,” said Ted General, a columnist with this paper and the FHHS Alumni Association’s publicity coordinator. “I think it’s great that during my lifetime we’re able to celebrate the 75^th anniversary of the school I attended and we’re looking forward to a very interesting and great day.”

Doors will open for tours at 11 a.m. and a ceremony in the auditorium will commence at 1 p.m.

According to school Principal Kaye Houlihan, any proceeds from the night will go toward scholarships for 2017’s graduating seniors.

Founded in 1941, the public high school overlooks the Narrows strait and the lower New York Bay. Current student enrollment sits at 4,583 and the school offers various competitive sports teams and programs along with a performing arts program.

The school has been an important neighborhood institution throughout the years and boasts a rich history. In a recent Throwback Thursday post we published, we featured a page from a November, 1946 issue of The Brooklyn Spectator, detailing the possibility of “multiple sessions” at the school.

Additionally, the school boasts numerous notable alumni over the years, including Janet Yellen, chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve System; Christopher Mega, former New York assemblymember, state senator, and New York Supreme Court justice; Councilmember Vincent Gentile; Albert King, retired NBA Player; Bernard King, retired NBA All-star; Julio Lugo, retired Major League baseball player; Jaiquawn Jarrett, NFL safety for the New York Jets; and Neil Stevenson, former chief of U.S. Navy chaplains, among others.
