A Look Back: The Brooklyn Dodgers

With baseball season upon us, it seems the perfect time to look back at Brooklyn’s own bums, the Dodgers, who have been gone from the borough since 1957 but are not forgotten by the legions of baseball fans who still cherish their memory.

In 1956, as seen in this photo from the pages of this newspaper, an effort was afoot to keep the team here in Ebbets Field (home to the team since 1913).

Feeling that the team had outgrown its home field, owner Walter O’Malley announced his intention of moving the Dodgers to Los Angeles after his efforts to secure the land to build a new stadium (more or less where Barclays Center now is) were unsuccessful.

The Dodgers played their last game in Brooklyn on September 24, 1957, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-0.
