A Look Back: The Bay Ridge ferry

With the first phase of the New York City Ferry network underway, we look back to another ferry route that once serviced Southwest Brooklyn.

The 69th Street Ferry transported passengers between what is now known as the American Veterans Memorial Pier and St. George in Staten Island. The ferry began its operation in 1912 and ran until 1964, apparently made obsolete by the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge that same year.

This June, the NYC Ferry’s South Brooklyn route will once again offer Bay Ridgeites ferry service from the pier.
