PHOTOS: Our Lady of Grace welcomes students with Back to School BBQ

Going back to school in style.

Students and parents celebrated the new school year as Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy, 385 Avenue W, hosted its first Back to School BBQ on Saturday, September 9.

The celebration, which spanned from 11 a.m.- 10 p.m., included fun for the entire family, such as inflatable rides, a deejay, live entertainment. wine and beer for the adults,  contests and more.

“It was run by the Our Lady of Grace Academy and Parish Fundraising Committee,” said Mary Ann De Luca, event organizer of the successful day. “Some of the rides were free. We had a dunk tank, a pony ride, miniature golf, sand art, and an adult and child pie eating contest, and received donations of food. There were plenty of tables for people to eat at. Around 200 people showed up. It was a success.”

Antique cars were also on display through the help of Tommy Bug Auto Repair, as well as fire trucks.

Among those in attendance, according to De Luca were auxiliary police from the 61st Precinct, Father Vincent Chirichella and Councilmember Mark Treyger. Also, De Luca added, Boy Scout Troop 376 sold zeppoli.

“(It was a) gorgeous day for a Back to School BBQ at Our Lady of Grace in Gravesend,” said Treyger on his Facebook page of the event. “Thank you, Father Vincent and the entire parish for organizing a beautiful event and bringing our community together. It was great seeing and speaking with up-and-coming leaders Priscilla Consolo and Anthony Butta.”
