BREAKING: Major power outage leaves thousands without power across Dyker

A massive power outage in Dyker Heights could leave residents without electricity until after 4 p.m., Con Ed is estimating.

According to the company, more than 6,000 customers are currently being affected by the outage, with an estimated restoration time of 4:30 p.m.

Power started going out across the neighborhood just past 1 p.m. Monday.

When asked, a representative for Con Ed told this paper it was “too early to tell” what caused the outage and that, at this time, it is being classified as an “equipment failure.”

According to Councilmember Justin Brannan, the NYPD has called a Level 1 Mobilization to address the outages and direct traffic.

“I am being told over 6,000 are currently without power right now,” Brannan told this paper. “Estimated time of restoration still TBD but ConEd is cautiously optimistic for speedy recovery. Crews are on site and it’s being worked on as we speak. My office is in constant touch with City Hall, Con Ed and Captain [Robert] Conwell of the 68 and we will get through this safely.”

As is State Senator Marty Golden’s office, his aide John Quaglione said.

Outages are being seen from the low 70’s to the mid-80’s between 10th and 13th Avenues. In addition, traffic lights are reportedly out along 75th Street and 12th Avenue.

Flickering lights have also been reported in Bay Ridge.

Golden’s office is urging residents to take precaution in the meantime by unplugging televisions and computers to prevent damage to equipment, using flashlights instead of candles, turning off light switches and keeping fridges and freezer doors closed.

When power is restored, Quaglione added, it’s best to reconnect electronics one at a time.

Official outage boundaries, Brannan told this paper, are 59th Street to the north, 84th Street to the south, 13th Avenue to the east and 10th Avenue to the west.

Update: As of 2 p.m. there were about 1,800 customers without power, down from approximately 6,000.

“They’re working fast,” Brannan said.

Update: As of 4:30 p.m., the outage was under control, according to Con Ed’s online Storm Center.
