62nd Precinct officers dubbed cops of the month for saving local woman from suicide attempt

Hats off.

Two 62^nd Precinct officers were awarded Cop of the Month honors on Tuesday, February 21 for successfully saving the life of a Bensonhurst woman who cops say attempted suicide late last month.

According to Captain Anthony Sanseverino, commanding officer of the 62^nd Precinct, at around 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, January 28 the two officers – P.O. Thomas Mercado and P.O. Jean Milord – responded to a 911 call to a residence on 15^th Avenue, at which time they discovered a 32-year-old woman unconscious and unresponsive with a belt fastened around her neck.

“They immediately called for an ambulance and administered CPR while conducting chest compressions and rescue breathing,” the captain told a crowded room at the 62’s monthly community council meeting, held inside the precinct’s Bath Avenue building on Tuesday, February 21. “They waited to obtain a pulse and then the EMS took over, and transferred her to Maimonides where she eventually lived.”

Sanseverino noted that the duo, without a doubt, saved the life of this local resident.

“For that, we are honoring them tonight,” he said, noting that the two, though present for the meeting, were also busy studying for Wednesday’s sergeant’s exam.

Mercado and Milord were joined at the meeting by their families, and were also rewarded with citations from a number of local politicians.

“I congratulate this month’s ‘Cops of the Month’ for the 62nd Precinct and continue to admire and salute their bravery,” noted State Senator Marty Golden. “The men and women of the 62nd Precinct continue to serve and protect our community each and every day and save lives. I am proud to have bestowed recognition on behalf of the State Senate to Officers Milord and Mercado thank them on behalf of a grateful neighborhood.”
