Police Beat: 62nd Precinct, Week of June 30 – July 6


Between Thursday, June 30, and Wednesday, July 6, the 62nd Precinctreceived reports of one robbery, seven burglaries, four felonyassaults, eight grand larcenies and five auto thefts. Compared tolast week, this represents an increase in burglaries, felonyassaults and auto thefts. Compared to this time last month, thearea is seeing more burglaries, grand larcenies and autothefts.


A Bath Beach contractor is out a load of copper wires, fittings andother plumbing and home renovation supplies after a thief allegedlybroke into a residential work site and entered the house, where theitems were stored, said police.

The theft occurred at around 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 2, on Bay23rd Street near Cropsey Avenue. The thief is said to have enteredthrough a second floor window after getting past the temporarywork containment area. A witness told police that the suspect is a30-year-old white male who drove away in a car.


Someone broke into a house at West Seventh Street and HighlawnAvenue and stole two guns, a revolver and a pistol, police said.The trigger-seeking thief allegedly entered and exited through aside window at around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 1.


Four young men, two of them juveniles, were arrested for assaultinga 21-year-old man with their fists, feet, glass bottles and abroomstick early Tuesday, July 5, at Bay Parkway and 66th Street,said police.

The victim was treated at the scene for lacerations to his face,right ear and backside. An initial canvass of the area yielded thesuspects, who were positively ID’d and apprehended.


A 19-year-old man had to be taken to Lutheran Medical Center forinjuries sustained in an attack by an unknown male at RutherfordPlace and Bay 17th Street on Tuesday, July 5, police said.

The attack occurred at around 8:10 p.m. when the victim wasapproached by an unidentified male, who allegedly proceeded to hithim with a baseball bat before stabbing him in the back with aknife. There was no video surveillance available.


Police arrested a 43-year-old Hispanic man for allegedly chokingand bashing his girlfriend’s head against the bedframe in herapartment at 78th Street and 14th Avenue.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday, July 3,when the 53-year-old woman was home. After being attacked, thevictim told police that her boyfriend threatened her so that shefeared for her life.


A 47-year-old Asian man was left tusk-less after someone broke thefront passenger window of his car at around 3 a.m. on Sunday, July3, police said.

The car had been parked at 65th Street and 18th Avenue when thethief allegedly filched the elephant tusk and mammoth tusk frominside the vehicle.


A 76-year-old woman put down her purse for just a few minutes whilebringing bags of groceries up to her second floor apartment on West12th Street near Avenue U, but that was enough for someone to grabit, said police.

The theft occurred at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 2. With her shoppingtrip over, the woman told police that she only had $5 in cash pluscredit cards and ID in her bag. She also said that she suspects aneighbor of being the culprit.
