Cops honored for apprehending fleeing suspects

The 68th Precinct honored three police officers who were instrumental in capturing two men who allegedly robbed a man of his cash and cell phone at gunpoint.

The victim of the crime, which occurred on the corner of Fourth Avenue and 100th Street on February 9 at 10 p.m., called 911 and said the robbers had headed toward the Belt Parkway in a silver Mercedes with an Alaska license plate, Captain Richard DiBlasio, the precinct’s commanding officer, said at the Community Council meeting last week.

Police Officers Timothy Gilsenan and Son Cao headed toward the Belt Parkway’s 14th Avenue and Bay 8th Street entrance but weren’t sure which direction the suspects were travelling so they took a chance on the eastbound direction, DiBlasio explained. With Lieutenant Michael Fleming providing a description of the suspects’ vehicle over the police radio, Gilsenan and Cao spotted the car near the Belt’s Rockaway Parkway exit.

“They did a felony stop on the Belt,” DiBlasio explained, “[which is] very dangerous.”

The dark night sky and the construction on the Belt made the situation even more dangerous for the officers, DiBlasio said. Fortunately, they managed to stop the car and arrest both suspects, as well as recovering two firearms from the vehicle. The men were later charged with robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.

Although he wasn’t at the scene of the arrest, Fleming “assisted greatly in apprehending these perpetrators by taking charge on the radio,” DiBlasio said. “He made sure that each point of that precinct was covered.”
