See You At The BEAT Festival!

Brooklyn’s first ever theater festival — Brooklyn Emerging Artists in Theater (BEAT) Festival — will take place throughout the month of September at venues around the borough.

Until September 23, up-and-coming artists in theater, dance and voice will have a chance to showcase their work. In theater, the lineup includes Lemon Andersen, Elevator Repair Service, Radha Bank, The Irondale Ensemble and Theater Group Dzieci. In dance, performers include Noemie Lafrance, Creative Outlet Dance Theatre, Marshall Davis Jr., Kimberly Bartosik/daela and Courtney Giannone. In voice, the schedule includes the American Opera Projects & Opera on Tap and Ismael “Ish” Islam.

Stephen Shelley, BEAT festival artistic director, thinks “Brooklyn is home to many talented performing artists,” and that “Brooklyn does well with festivals.” However, he also believes that there is “currently nothing that features theater, art and voice; and that brings them all together.”

Shelley spoke of Marshall Davis Jr., a “quite accomplished” tap-dancer who will have an opportunity to perform on his own. Born in Miami Beach, Florida, young Davis, whose career history includes being a side dancer with Savion Glover, will “get a chance to receive some focus onto his work,” Shelley said.

                Venues include the Irondale Center in Fort Greene, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in Park Slope, the Waterfront Museum in Red Hook, the Flatbush Reformed Church in Flatbush, the Coney Island Sideshow Theater in Coney Island, the Brooklyn Public Library in Prospect Heights and El Puente in Williamsburg.

BEAT performances will take place every day from Wednesday, September 12 to Sunday, September 23.  All general admission tickets are $20, but festival passes and VIP packages are available.
