Former 68th Precinct cops sentenced

The New York State District Attorney’s Office announced on October 10 that three former 68th Precinct cops had been sentenced for their roles in conspiracies to transport firearms and other stolen goods across state lines illegally.

Judge Barbara Jones sentenced Eddie Goris to 36 months in prison and Richard Melnick to 21 months in prison. Judge Richard S. Sullivan sentenced John Mahoney to one year and one day in prison.

Goris participated in schemes to transport defaced guns and stolen goods across state lines. Melnik and Mahoney participated in the actual transport of the stolen goods interstate.

“These three sentencings are sad occasions in the history of the finest police department in the country,” noted Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bhahara. “With them, we are that much closer to putting this sordid chapter behind us.”

Of the 12 individuals indicted in the smuggling ring, all but one have pleaded guilty. Other 68th Precinct cops involved were former Police Officers Joseph Trischitta, Marco Venezia and William Masso, all of whom have already been sentenced – Trischitta to 40 months in prison, Venezia to 24 months in prison and Masso to 57 months in prison.
