Brooklyn Chamber resurrects two popular events: BKLYN DESIGNS and Brooklyn Eats

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is excited to welcome the new year with two rebranded Chamber events that we have in store for residents and the local business community this year.

From May 10-12, 2013, Brooklyn Designs – widely referred to as BKLYN DESIGNS – will return at St. Ann’s Warehouse in DUMBO. This event is New York’s top exhibition of contemporary furnishings and home accessories that are designed or manufactured in Brooklyn.

Over the past decade, BKLYN DESIGNS has grown to be one of the biggest design shows in the country and raises the bar for avant-garde, iconic Brooklyn designs, exceeding the expectations of both participants and viewers alike. This year will be no exception.

This internationally renowned juried exhibition features a dynamic collection of designs from the most innovative and cutting edge Brooklyn-based furnishing designers and manufacturers. As a result, thousands of visitors are expected to descend on DUMBO over three days to take in the borough’s creative energy and the dynamic collection of designs, including the latest contemporary furniture and accessories. Local restaurants and retail outlets will also benefit from the increased foot traffic. To learn more, visit www.bklyndesigns.com.

In June (stay tuned for the date!), the Brooklyn Chamber will be following BKLYN DESIGNS up with a return of Brooklyn Eats!

Brooklyn Eats is a signature tasting event that we are bringing back after three years. If you thought the food scene in Brooklyn was hot, wait until you see the new Brooklyn Eats. Brooklyn is all about food, and food manufacturing has become one of our fastest growing industries. To say a food product is made in Brooklyn conjures images of a high quality, interesting and tasty product.

The Chamber’s new incarnation of Brooklyn Eats will be as the borough’s leading food manufacturing trade show featuring the best of new and old Brooklyn combined to introduce and promote our local products and manufacturers.

We are excited to present Brooklyn Eats at 630 Flushing Avenue, the former Pfizer plant, a large multi-tenant building catering to many food manufacturers. To learn more, visit our website www.ibrooklyn.com.

In the latest issue of the Brooklyn Labor Market Review, put together by the Fiscal Policy Institute this past December, the Chamber highlighted the so-called Brooklyn “Food Chain” – starting with the food manufacturing/wholesale distribution, and including grocery stores, specialty stores, restaurants, and coffee shops. The report found that 12.5 percent of the borough’s 472,000 private sector jobs are food-related.

Food accounts for one out of six of the 49,000 businesses in Brooklyn – with nearly 59,000 people employed by 7,800 businesses. These are truly remarkable figures – and yet another sign that the local food scene is booming right here.

This year will see these two events from the Brooklyn Chamber’s past rebranded for the future. As the Chamber, and this great borough, continue to prosper and grow, I hope you will join me to celebrate some of the best that Brooklyn has to offer.

Carlo A. Scissura is the President & CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. Our mission is to promote a healthy and robust business environment in Brooklyn.  To join, call (718) 875-1000 or visit www.ibrooklyn.com.
