SATURDAY JANUARY 12

MULCHFEST: Christmas trees are being turned into mulch in Prospect Park. Bring your tree to Third Street and Prospect Park West or Park Circle from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and watch as it is chipped into mulch. You can even take some home for your own garden, and it’s completely free. Event runs through Sunday, January 13. Co-sponsored by the Park Slope Civic Council. WRITING WORKSHOP: Using your life stories, The Fundamentals of Sense Writing: Memoir workshop explores the connections between your senses, emotions and imagination. Writers of all levels are welcome. This workshop will be on Saturday and Sunday, January 13, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Old Stone House of Brooklyn, 336 Third Street between 4th and 5th Avenues. Advance registration is required. SUNDAY JANUARY 13

CRAFTS: Join the Old Stone House for their inaugural Makers’ Meetup. Bring your current sewing/knitting project for a fun and festive 21st Century Crafts Circle. Light snacks will be provided. Adults, feel free to bring your kids age 10 and up if they have a project they are working on. This event will be held at 4 p.m. at the Old Stone House of Brooklyn, 336 Third Street between 4th and 5th Avenues.

 

KID FRIENDLY CLASS: Kids can make their own Mesozoic mini-monster with The New Victory Theater at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Artists and staff will teach kids how to make their very own dinosaur puppet (supplies provided). Plus, they’ll have the chance to bring their prehistoric pal to Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo at the New Victory Theater, showing from January 18 to 27. The museum is located at 145 Brooklyn Avenue. KID FRIENDLY CLASS: Gather up your picks and fossil brushes – it’s excavation time at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum! Kids can examine real fossils, then play paleontologist as they unearth real bones, shells and other treasures from a plaster dig site. This event is from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., for ages four and up. MUSICAL PERFORMANCE: Martin McQuade will perform a show celebrating the centennial of the legendary movie star and entertainer Danny Kaye, born in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn on January 18, 1913. Pianist Pete Sokolow will accompany McQuade for this special tribute. The show will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Greenhouse Café, 7717 3rd Avenue. There is no cover charge or minimum.

CANDIDATES FORUM: What do the 2013 NYC mayoral candidates think about public health? Find out! This is a non-partisan event. This event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served, but you must RSVP at Eventbrite. TRIVIA NIGHT: Join trivia masters Stuart Post and Chris Kelly for the first-ever underground trivia battle at the New York Transit Museum. This event will be from 6 to 9 p.m., at the New York Transit Museum, Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for Transit Museum and Transportation Alternatives Members. DISCUSSION: The Old Stone House presents Brooklyn Reading Works: The Truth and Publishing, a panel discussion about the future of writers, agents, editors and publishing featuring Rob Stillman, editor of Tin House; moderated by John Guidry, author of the blog Truth and Rocket Science. This discussion will be held at 8 p.m. at the Old Stone House, 336 Third Street between 4th and 5th Avenues. A $5 suggested donation includes drinks and snacks.

 

SATURDAY JANUARY 19

PERFORMANCE: The Old Stone House presents Spellbound Theater’s Aidee, an original play of hide and seek for children seven and under. This show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, January 20, at 10 a.m., at the Old Stone House, 336 Third Street between 4th and 5th Avenues. Tickets are $10 for children and $15 for adults. CELEBRATION: Visitors to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum can celebrate the life and contributions of civil-rights hero Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with hands-on programs for all ages during a three-day birthday celebration, from Saturday through Monday, January 21. The museum’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend will feature a variety of classic museum programs created to explore the legacy of this great African-American leader. MUSICAL PERFORMANCE: Enjoy a conversation and performance by composer, performer and audio producer Eve Beglarian, hosted by composer Dan Joseph. Belgarian’s recent music has been inspired by a four and a half month journey she took down the Mississippi River by kayak and bicycle in 2009. The event will take place at 8 p.m. at the Old Stone House, 336 Third Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues.

FILM FESTIVAL: The BAMKids Film festival will be taking place on Saturday February 2 and Sunday February 3. REUNION: The Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School Alumnae Association will host the Annual Alumnae Reunion.
