Countdown to March 1: the return of Fairway AND Red Hook Lobster Pound

Lobster season will be back in force in Brooklyn this Friday, March 1, which is when the Red Hook Lobster Pound will have its grand re-opening, starting at Noon.

The day is already a big one, as neighborhood touchstone Fairway Market is also set to reopen its doors that morning.

Fairway Market before Sandy hit.

To join in the festivities, get to Fairway, located at 480 Van Brunt Street,  any time between 7:30 and 11 a.m., which is when the market’s doors open. The nearly four hours of pre-opening fun includes live music from KTU’s Matt Bosso and the Brooklyn Dodger Symphony Band, giveaways, vendor samplings, guest cameos — including Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Miss America Mallory Hagan, who lives in Park Slope.

Pound co-founder Susan Povich is excited to dig in to their lobster mac-and-cheese.

Pound co-owners Susan Povich and Ralph Gorham have rebuilt the store, with a new kitchen and 500-gallon lobster tank.

The food truck, Big Red, won’t be up and on the streets until April.

However, they are hiring for the spring and summer, with positions available starting on re-opening day. Email work@redhooklobster.com to apply.

Fairway will maintain normal business hours. The Pound will currently be open at Noon on Wednesdays through Sundays, closing at 8 p.m. on weekdays and Sunday, and 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The return of much-beloved Sandy-damaged businesses to the Red Hook waterfront is a welcome sight. See you all there!
