NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

Our unsung hero of the week is collective: Pam Hume and the Consolation Ministry she coordinates at Our Lady of Angels Church. Pam is a lifelong Bay Ridge resident who quietly makes a difference by bringing comfort to many of the bereaved in our community.

The group was founded in 2003 by Father Kenneth Calder, to assist the bereaved at their most vulnerable time. The moment the team hears of a loss, members reach out to offer any assistance needed. They attend every funeral mass, and after the funeral, follow up with a note or telephone call.

One year later, the family is again invited to a yearly memorial mass in honor of their loved one. If Pam is unavailable, other consolation ministers, including Ann and Phil Carraher, Mary Stuart and Mary Ruffin-Hicks, are on hand to offer support. This dedicated group truly makes a difference.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Cinnamon

The health benefits of taking cinnamon are legendary (do not take if your suffer from hypoglycemia). It helps to lower blood sugar and in some studies, stop yeast infections that have been resistant to medication.

In one study at Copenhagen University, patients were given half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder combined with one tablespoon honey every morning before breakfast. They reported significant relief of arthritis pain. Even smelling cinnamon seems to help sharpen cognitive function and memory.

Please consult your doctor if you are on any medication.
