Morning Report: Monday, March 25

The Midwest and Mid-Atlantic already got hit by a winter storm — nicknamed Virgil by Weather.com — that is now headed our way. Light snow is expected throughout the day today, resulting in “light, slushy accumulations during the afternoon and evening, particularly on cars and grass.”

Meanwhile, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for all of Kings County and parts of southern Queens, and temperatures will reach a high of around 38 degrees.

Five things to know this morning: 

  • SUNY Downstate Medical Center’s bailout request was rejected by state lawmakers, who responded that hospital administration must “restructure” their operating plan. An estimated $150 million will be needed for them to survive the year. [NY Daily News]
  • Watch out for the 30 dancing “horses” in Grand Central Terminal this week, courtesy of Heard NY, a performance art project that is combining dancers from the Alvin Ailey Dance School with life-size horse costumes and live music. [NYT]
  • Luna Park in Coney Island may have reopened with a hot dog eating contest and free rides, but there’s still a lot of work to do to clean and repair the damage from Hurricane Sandy. [NY1]
  • Mayor Bloomberg and the city Health Department have proposed two new bills, targeting cigarettes: one to make them less visible and the other to prohibit coupon use. [NY1]
  • Packaged toddler food often has three times as much salt/sodium as recommended, says the CDC. [NPR]
