Morning Report: Tuesday, March 12

It is 49 degrees out and rainy in Brooklyn today and is expected to continue that way through most, if not all, of the afternoon, according to Weather.com’s forecast for the zip code 11215. Winds are coming from the south and will increase from the current 16 mph to 20 mph, with wind gusts of around 29 mph. Temperatures will stay in the low 50s at most.

 

What to know this morning: 

  • A candlelight vigil last night for East Flatbush teen Kimani Gray, 16, who was  killed by plainclothes NYPD officers late Saturday night for allegedly  pointing a gun at them, turned into a violent protest – some are calling it a riot – against perceived police abuse that resulted in property damage, a few non-serious injuries, and one arrest. Gray was shot 11 times.   • NYC restaurants are in limbo today after a judge overturned the soda ban passed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the city’s Health Department that would have gone into effect today. Bloomberg vowed to win on appeal. [Yahoo! News]
  • School officials at the Brooklyn Children’s Center are investigating an incident where a teenage boy shoved a disabled 13-year-old girl out the back of a moving school bus in Brownsville yesterday. [NYDN]
  • More personnel have been added to the NYPD’s newly-renamed Collision Investigation Squad, after years of advocacy to get vehicle accidents and crashes investigated even when no one has died. [NYTimes, NYPost, Gothamist]
