Muffin’s Pet Connection: Topaz needs a home

MEEEOW MEEEOW: Topaz, a friendly stray cat, climbed up on a back porch in Boro Park and gave birth to her three babies: Amber, Agate and Beryl. The kittens are now three weeks old and will be ready for adoption in a few weeks once they are old enough to be spayed and neutered.

Topaz, a friendly, dedicated mom, will make a wonderful addition to your home. She is a young, brown tortoiseshell/tabby domestic shorthair. Her kittens all have white underbellies; two of her babies are orange bi-colors and the other is a black and white bi-color.

The NYC Feral Cat Initiative, a program of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, was able to rescue Topaz and her babies from a life on the streets. For an adoption application for Topaz or her kittens, contact [email protected].

FYI: THE NEW YORK CITY FERAL CAT INITIATIVE (NYCFCI) is a program of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals. It is committed to helping New York City’s feral cat overpopulation problems through humane, non-lethal method of Trap-Neuter-Return, TNR.

Tens of thousands of street cats live in alleyways, backyards and outdoor spaces of New York City. They are the starving offspring of lost or abandoned pet cats and,

un-neutered, they produce thousands of unwanted kittens. Colonies of cats group themselves together in packs.

The hope of a no-kill New York City by 2015 is a vision. In the 10 years since the Alliance began its quest for a no-kill community, working together, more than 237,000 cats and dogs lives have been saved.

Today, New York City has the lowest euthanasia per capita rate for any major U.S. city (one per 1,000 per capita). Euthanasia of cats and dogs at our city shelters declined for the ninth consecutive year. More than three out of every four lives were saved.

Intake of cats and dogs at AC&C continued to decline to an all-time low of under 30,000. Close to 67,000 dogs and cats were spayed or neutered.

More than 14,000 cats and dogs were transferred from Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) to partner shelters and rescue groups for adoption. More than 16,000 animals were transported to new homes on their Wheels of Hope vans. E-mail: [email protected].
