Making its way from Manhattan to Brooklyn, this year’s Tropfest—the world’s largest short film festival—will take place in Prospect Park on Saturday, June 22.
Extended a week from the original deadline, this year’s cutoff for New York submissions is May 16. The grand prize winning filmmaker gets $20,000.
Acclaimed actor, producer, director, and screenwriter, Liev Schreiber will host the event complete with music, food, art installations and of coarse, an enticing lineup of short films.
“Tropfest New York is an incredible opportunity for emerging filmmakers to have their work seen by a huge audience, along with a judging panel that shares their passion for film,” said Schreiber. “I’m very pleased to host this year’s New York event, and to be part of bringing Tropfest across the bridge to Brooklyn.”
The 21-year-old festival has become known as “one of the world’s most exciting launch pads for emerging filmmakers,” according to a Tropfest press release. It was held last year in Bryant Park, hosted by Hugh Jackman, with a panel of jurors that included Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class) and Judah Friedlander (30 Rock).
The free event originated in Sydney, Australia, when it debuted one short film for an audience of 200 people. Today, the annual festival rakes in crowds of over 150,000 film lovers in person, plus thousands more via national satellite and television broadcast.
