Unsung Bay Ridge: Making Bay Ridge safer

Our community is fortunate to have Lieutenant James “Jimmy” Woods as a resident. He has served as the community coordinator for NYPD Patrol Brooklyn South for 31 years.

Jimmy Woods has his ‘finger on the pulse’ of each Brooklyn community, as he has investigated their concerns with his trademark smile and willing personality for decades.

Four years ago, he was credited with playing a prominent role in the arrest of a burglar who had persistently invaded Bay Ridge homes. I have known Jimmy for many years, and I consider our community a safer and friendlier place in which to live because of residents like him.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Cough and Chest Congestion

A folk remedy for cough and chest congestion is to take three teaspoons flour, one teaspoon dry mustard and one egg white. Make a paste and spread on a white handkerchief or lightweight cotton. Fold the handkerchief with the paste on the inside. Rub the chest with petroleum jelly and re-apply if needed to prevent the mustard from burning the chest. Dress warmly before going to sleep and relief should be evident the next morning.

Others use mustard, flour and water in a piece of old flannel bed sheet double wrapped. Leave for no more than one hour or less if the skin is sensitive.

Please consult your doctor if you are on any medication.
