Unsung Bay Ridge: Soldiering on

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

This week, we salute a man who has served his country well; a man who has championed veteran’s rights and is past commander of the Bay Ridge American Legion Post. That man is Rene Adams.

His leadership helped to increase the membership of the post and open the building up for many charity events. Rene was chairperson of the Veterans Committee for the Bay Ridge Community Council. He was elected and served as Kings County American Legion commander and has been actively involved in legion activities since his return from the Korean War.

We are grateful to have Rene, whose patriotism and service are an example for young soldiers.

The 20th Annual Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade was a very special occasion for all of us. At the same time, I was saddened to hear that our first Grand Marshal, Ed Smith

Ed had served for almost thirty years with the New York Fire Department. He reached the rank of captain and was president of the Fire Officers Union. Ed was an inspiration to us all. We shall miss him.

Spring is here and the beautiful marigold plant will soon be brightening our gardens. Do you know that this plant, which is also called Calendula, is tasty in salads and possess many of the same properties as saffron?

Marigolds have been known to heal stomach, liver and intestinal ailments. The marigold is a folk remedy for ulcers and gastritis.
